Developer Portal - Case Study

THE PROBLEM What I observed

How might we create a simplified Developer Portal to help Fannie Mae's customers (Lenders) and Technology Service Providers to obtain API keys to exchange their data with hundreds of internal applications easily and securely?

Developer Portal is an API platform for Partners, Vendors, and internal product teams to connect with business systems and access data in a secured and efficient way.

There was no existing platform or ecosystem available to expose their API products to B2B customers, partners and vendors. Also, it was huge challenge for the internal customers and product teams to exchange their data and services via secured channel.

Developers are the primary target users to build solutions around their process and data exchange.

USER RESEARCH What we did

TARGET USERS

Developers from Lender organizations and Mortgage Technology Service Providers

SCOPE & DELIVERABLES

I conducted extensive research to learn about user pain points about the discoverability of Fannie Mae Customer APIs and access to our solutions. I learned what our partners, vendors, and internal customers were looking for!

MY ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Product Designer, I was the one who kick-started the discovery sessions, coordinated with 10+ business stakeholder teams and developers to create the end-to-end experience of the Developer Portal experience. I worked with the business and program team gathered requirements, organized brainstorming/working sessions with tech and architecture teams to define the journey flows. I also coordinated with the engineering team to guaranteed delivering a simplified portal that offers API catalog and API key generation features for the internal and external developers community.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Define UX scope and delivery plan
  • User interviews and competitive analysis
  • Coordinate with business and marketing teams sprint stories
  • Information arch and journey map
  • Create wireframes, design mockups, prototypes
  • Work with the development team to build the portal
  • Visual QA and overall design audit

I created multiple workflows and variations to align with what the business wants and how the end-users (Developers) would be to accessing the portal and create Apps plus API keys. Also, designed the experience for the product team to onboard the APIs to the ecosystem and manage their catalog by each business line. I designed visual design mockups and Invision prototypes to validate them with developers, prior to hand-off the artifacts to the engineering team.

THE RESULTS What I and my team achieved success animation

The features that are designed and built:
1. Access to a full suite of APIs across the mortgage life cycle in one place
2. Getting Started section that provides step-by-step onboarding instructions for lenders and Technology Service Providers
3. Sample use cases that highlight practical, everyday applications for many of the APIs

The fully responsive CMS based developer portal offers modern capabilities and the primary features like API key generation and management of resources to access various applications with B2B customers.
